To some extent, we are all in a place to do end-of-life planning because almost all of us will experience a period in our lives when we experience the loss of functionality and the need to receive care and assistance with our lives. Waiting until you actually need the care usually results in “fire-drill” planning with an entire family in crisis mode. Most of us know our care preferences and the health-care choices we would make according to our life values, we just have not put them in a legally effective and enforceable set of documents. The good news, if you plan now, your care will be according to your choices with no decisions by strangers or lack of ability for action due to lack of authority.
